Employer Newsletter - Aug. 1, 2025

Aug. 1, 2025

As a collaborator in Alberta's health care ecosystem, the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) is committed to supporting employers in fostering a professional, competent and ethical nursing workforce through Right-touch relational regulation.

2025-2026 Renewal is Open

All registrants of the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) are required to renew their permits on an annual basis and employers have a responsibility to ensure that their employees have active practice permits.

Renewal is open from Aug. 1, 2025 to Sept. 30, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. MT. Renewed permits will be valid for the upcoming practice year which runs from Oct. 1, 2025 to Sept. 30, 2026.

Individuals who do not complete their renewal application by Sept. 30, 2025 will not be able to practise when the upcoming practice year begins.

Once the renewal period closes, the CRNA will provide lists directly to employers including the names of individuals whose permits have expired and are not entitled to work under a protected title or designation in Alberta.

Additional Information and Responsibilities

The CRNA works closely with employers and other collaborators in the health care ecosystem to ensure that only licensed individuals practise as registered nurses and nurse practitioners in Alberta. The CRNA has many processes and tools in place to support employers.

Feedback Needed on Draft Standards

The CRNA regularly asks for input as it develops and revises standards and guidelines to ensure they are evidence informed and align with best practice.

This input opportunity includes eight draft standards of practice documents, which are intended to update existing standards and ensure the direction provided is clear, concise and outlines what the public can expect from registered nurses (RNs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) in providing safe, competent and ethical care in Alberta.

The deadline to provide feedback for each standard is Aug. 31, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. MT.

Feedback Needed on Artificial Intelligence (AI) Practice Advice Draft Document

The CRNA requests your input on the new draft document Artificial Intelligence: Practice Advice to ensure the direction is clear, concise and that it outlines what the public can expect from Alberta registered nurses (RNs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) to provide informed, safe, competent and ethical care.

The purpose of this draft document is to define key terms and concepts related to artificial intelligence (AI), outline its associated benefits and risks, and introduce eleven guiding principles within a framework. This framework provides practical guidance to support registrants in using AI competently, safely and ethically in their practice.

The deadline to provide feedback is Aug. 18, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. MT.
