Decision-Making Standards for Nurses in the Supervision of Health Care Aides

Purpose

Effective March 31, 2023

On March 31, 2023, various provisions of Health Statutes Amendment Act, 2020 (No. 2), commonly called “Bill 46”, and regulation made under it came into force. Therefore, references to restricted activities and activities of daily living have moved from the Government Organization Act to either the Health Professions Act or the Health Professions Restricted Activity Regulation.

The purpose of this document is to identify standards that must be met by registered nurses (RN), licensed practical nurses (LPN) and registered psychiatric nurses (RPN) for the supervision of health care aides in the provision of care and performance of restricted activities. Throughout this document, the term "nurse" refers to a RN, LPN, or RPN in Alberta.
